Some believe that Kandi sky had synesthesia. To demonstrate what that is like I showed this amazing video to all of my students. They loved it!

Fifth grade Kandinsky Inspired Tree Sculptures
Students covered card stock with phone book pages then painted with watercolors on top.  Then on a separate sheet they painted concentric circles using tempera paint being mindful of color choice.  Finally they cut out all of the parts, put it together and created a stand.
Fourth grade Kandinsky Inspired Mobiles
Students created concentric circles out of construction paper.  They created designs with oil pastels on both sides of their circles.  Then they found a stick outside and used string to create the mobile.
Third grade Kandinsky Inspired Gardens
Students first painted the background with watercolor paints.  On a separate sheet of paper they used tempera paint to make the circles.  They cut out the circles and used green construction paper with oil pastels to create the textured stems. Finally they used white oil pastel to create wispy clouds in the sky.
Second grade Kandinsky inspired landscapes
Students first painted the background with three different stripes of watercolor to simulate land forms.  Next they used bottle caps dipped in white paint and stamped bubbles onto the landscape.  Then they created concentric circles out of construction paper and added oil pastel designs on top of the circles.
First grade Kandinsky Inspired trees
First students drew oil pastel patterns and painted over the patterns with watercolor paints.  They were asked to paint at least three patterns and different areas of color.  Then they created a tree out of back construction paper.  They created circles out of construction paper and used oil pastels to create designs on the circles.
Kindergarten Kandinsky Inspired Circle Collages
Students folded their paper in four.  They traced plastic lids onto construction paper to assist in the circle making.  They glued together circles and then drew oil pastel designs on top.  They also drew patterns of different kinds of lines on the black paper background.

Scholastic Art
Welcome to my art room blog.  Here I will feature all of my projects from my students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.  Many of my projects are inspired by things I have seen on pinterest, art teacher blogs, museum sites and artsonia.  I usually see an idea and tweak it a bit.  I am a big fan of mixed media and collage so many of my projects involve layered materials.

This year I have decided to try something new.  I am going to choose one artist for each unit in the curriculum for grades k-5.  My first set of projects was inspired by the work of Wassily Kandinsky.  I looked at the enduring understandings and essential questions for each grade level and developed projects to meet those objectives.  I used scholastic art magazine and created a powerpoint that focused on Kandinsky's exploration of music and art.  Above  are the results.
